Gunnison Valley Hospital is a 24-bed, short term, acute care/critical access hospital owned and operated by the County of Gunnison. We are an Acute Care/ Critical Access hospital, governed by a 7-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Gunnison County Commissioners and licensed by the State of Colorado. Since 1938, the hospital has provided quality health care to the residents and visitors of the Gunnison County. The hospital was first Joint Commission Accredited in 2008, and has successfully under gone a second Joint Commission survey in 2011.
Our rural valley lends itself not only to standard medical and traumatic emergencies but also to extreme emergencies such as cold weather injuries and high altitude illness. Gunnison Valley Hospital is a Level IV Trauma Center and local physicians staff the ER 24 hours a day, seven days a week. General Surgical, Orthopedic and OB/GYN consultants are available on an on-call basis. The ER department is supplied with state-of-the-art equipment necessary to meet the demands of any patients with ailments ranging from bronchitis to multi-system trauma.
The EMS Department of Gunnison Valley Hospital is prepared 24 hours a day for rapid response and comprehensive care. Our EMS Service Area encompasses an area nearly twice the size of the State of Delaware. We also have award-winning ground ambulance transport connected to helicopter and fixed-wing air support when out-of-area referrals are necessary.
The Senior Care Center is a 59 bed facility providing 24-hour-a-day skilled nursing care. All beds are licensed for Medicare and Medicaid. Average daily census is budgeted at 47. The Assisted Living location is a 15-bed facility. Eight beds are licensed for Medicaid. Average daily census for Assisted Living is budgeted at 13. Hospice and Palliative Care average daily census is budgeted at 9 hospice patients and 20 palliative care patients for 2011.
In 2009, the Gunnison Valley Health Senior Care Center began the development of a master plan. This plan calls for construction of a new 49-bed skilled nursing facility and the addition of 8 assisted living units. The Board of Trustees and Management are currently in the process of developing a financial strategic plan to implement the master plan.
